Executive Leadership
Dr. Subodh Verma is a cardiac surgeon-scientist, Full Professor in the Departments of Surgery, and Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto, and holds a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Cardiovascular Surgery. He was a Clarivate Highly Cited Researcher in Clinical Medicine in 2022 and 2023. He is a past recipient of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada Gold Medal in Surgery and was bestowed the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine 2023 Alumnus of Distinction Award for Research. Dr. Verma is currently Scientific Program Committee Chair for the Canadian Society of Cardiac Surgeons. He has been an active contributor to Canadian clinical practice guidelines and has leadership roles in multiple contemporary global heart failure, cardiometabolic and inflammation-cardiovascular trials. Dr. Verma also leads a dynamic pre-clinical and translational research team that leverages pre-clinical disease models and clinical trial-derived data to identify novel mediators of cardiometabolic diseases.
Dr. David Mazer is a Full Professor in the Departments of Anesthesiology and Pain Medicine, Physiology, and Pharmacology and Toxicology at the University of Toronto and Cara Phelan Chair in Critical Care at St. Michael’s Hospital. He has previously been Associate Editor of the Canadian Journal of Anesthesia, Coordinator of Critical Care and Medical Director of CVICU at St. Michael's, and Vice-Chair for Research for the Department of Anesthesia at the University of Toronto. He is the current Chair of the Research Ethics Board of Unity Health Toronto. He has received both the Research Recognition Award and Gold Medal from the Canadian Anesthesiologists’ Society. Dr. Mazer’s translational research has focused on understanding mechanisms and improving outcomes in perioperative patients with cardiovascular disease. His research program focuses on perioperative blood conservation, cardiac physiology and perioperative organ protection.
